Nutrition – Probiosel®

Selenium-enriched Probiotics as a new source of selenium

« A probiotic is a living microorganism that, when consumed in adequate amounts, produces a benefit to the health of the host « (FAO / WHO, 2001).
The main microorganisms classified as probiotics are lactobacilli, bifidobacteria, Escherichia coli and yeast Sacchromyces boulardii. Probiotics are incorporated into foods – these are called functional foods or health foods.

« A health food or nutraceutical is a food or food ingredient, consumed to provide the necessary agents for the structure and functions of the body and deemed to have a beneficial effect on health, whether preventive or curative.  »

Research suggests that Bifidobacteria have several potential probiotic properties, particularly antimicrobial, immunomodulatory (i.e, balancing of natural resistance to infections and diseases), as well as cancer. They also exert an influence on the balance of the intestinal microflora facilitating in particular the digestion; they improve lactose tolerance and digestibility of dairy products; they promote the synthesis of B vitamins and improve the absorption of calcium.

« These products are the embodiment of the concept of health through food and are therefore part of the prevention of diseases. »

Probiotics are considered the essential health concept of the 21st century. According to Prof. Luc Montagnier (co-discoverer of the AIDS virus) « The medical field must move from a curative approach to a preventive – even integrative approach. » This is the message he delivered at the Montreal Conference, as part of the International Economic Forum of the Americas. (www.conferencedemontreal.com). The stakes are therefore major and the interests considerable.
